Hidden Jack

Hidden Jack is a plinth-shaped steel box with a brass boat propeller sitting on top, a pressure gauge on the side and an old bike pump standing to one side.
This piece requires viewer participation. By pumping the bike pump, an increase in the pressure shown on the gauge will encourage the viewer to continue pumping until the boat propeller starts spinning and the top of the steel box starts lifting. When the inner chamber of the box has fully risen, one can see an imprisoned figure cranking a handle. This action produces the rotation of the propeller through a complex gear mechanism. As the pressure is slowly released, the inner chamber gradually sinks down and the steel box is again closed.
