Made using the mechanical components within the body of Lepidopteran, (originally a paddle steamer bilge pump) Flaptor is in some ways one of the most complex Kinetic pieces I have attempted to date due to the interconnected movements within the Sculpture. On closer inspection you can see component moving around other component already moving in other ways, making for a mesmerizing fluidity in the orientation of movement.

The other challenge with this piece was making the immense weight of the components seem weightless or at least lighter than they, so as to suggesting the possibility of flight. Obviously the sculpture is heavy but few realize just how heavy it is on first impressions.
I have a real passion for this type of kinetic sculpture and will attempt to continue making pieces like this and with ever increasing mechanical complexity and interconnected mechanical movements.
